After going through the tunnel by Vansu tilts, I went over to Kipsala.  Kipsala caught my attention when I read about it on the tourist map.  I’m not sure why.  Maybe I was curious how the wealthier Latvians live.  Kipsala is known as the wealthier neighborhood in Riga.  This is partly because it is literally an island.  Maybe I was drawn there because I had heard about how beautiful the homes were – I love seeing beautiful homes.  Or maybe I was drawn there because I had some time before I headed back to Old Town.  Probably a combination of reasons.

My first impression upon seeing some of the homes…

Kipsala, Riga, Latvia“I feel like I’m back in Finland.”

Kipsala, Riga, LatviaYes, these are some of the very same type of homes one would see in and around Helsinki.  So what I learned is that wealthier Latvians are really just trying to be Finns.  Just kidding.

There were actually some very nice homes that were quite unique, like this apartment building.

Kipsala, Riga, LatviaI read that Kipsala is attempting to replace the old run down wooden homes with newer wooden homes.  They seem to be succeeding.  I did come across one run down abandoned wooden home…

Kipsala, Riga, LatviaI can only imagine what they will turn this beast into.

In addition to the wood homes, there are also many brick apartments that look lovely.

Kipsala, Riga, LatviaI really likes the stand alone homes – they had character…

Kipsala, Riga, LatviaAnd creativity…

Kipsala, Riga, LatviaI couldn’t get a good angle for the home above, but it has a statue of a kangaroo at the top.  Why?  Good question.

And you know you are in a wealthier neighborhood when the community goes to greater lengths to “cover” up some of the run down places.  Take this for example…

Kipsala, Riga, LatviaI looks like a nice, yet older, smaller home.  But upon further examination, you would discover that the house is actually wrapped in a print.  I couldn’t get close enough to get a picture of this, but it was fascinating none the less.  There is literally some kind of material with prints of windows on it wrapped around the house.

As I made my way through the island, I got to view the reason people live on Kipsala…

Kipsala, Riga, Latvia…for the view of Old Town.  Enjoy!
