One of the other amazing things about Iceland is the fact that there are all sorts of sources of fresh water around the island. Since this is essentially a volcanic island, land shifts and changes all the time. Cracks open up in the earth.
And you can go down into the crack and discover some of the freshest water you will ever taste in your life.
Yes, that’s snow down there in the crack. It’s a bit blurry, but trust me, it’s snow. This was the beginning of July too. It was warm for Iceland, up on the surface – around 50F. But in the crack, it was still around freezing.
After our guide collected some water for us to drink, she took our picture from down in the crack.
You get a sense of how deep it went.
