The highlight of the trip

Okapuka, Rhino

The absolute highlight of the trip was seeing two rhinos.

DSCN2332

Yes, two real live rhinos.  Our driver walkie talkied some of the other employees of the ranch to see if we could find the rhinos.  After driving around for about 1/2 hour, we found them.

DSCN2341

This was an awe inspiring experience.

DSCN2337

We did get a little nervous when the one got up and faced our vehicle.  But all was well.  No charging took place.

No sooner did this large beauty stand up, then he/she laid back down again.  That’s what happens when they realize we didn’t have food for them.

DSCN2345

To give you a sense of how close we were, look at the picture above.  We couldn’t have been more than 10 meters or 30 feet away.  Extremely close.

Until next time rhinos. I only hope there is a next time.

Yesterday I told you about having “Home on the range in my head.”

DSCN2322.JPG

Now you know why.

DSCN2324.JPG

These beauties were pretty neat to see.

But it was incredible to see them along with their “home” all at the same time.  Breathtaking.

When we continued our drive through Okapuka ranch, I couldn’t help but sing “home on the range” even though it has nothing to do with the African plains.

Regardless, it was beautiful.

As we kept driving through Okapuka ranch, we came across a herd of Zebra!

DSCN2281.JPG

There was no way we were going to get close to this herd though.  So we watched from a distance.  We knew we have only a short time before our presence would cause them to move on.

DSCN2283.JPG

Sure enough, after a brief minute or so, the herd decided that the new company of onlookers weren’t to their liking.  So they started to move on.

And off they went.

We kept going through Okapuka ranch and came across some other wonderful creatures.

DSCN2275.JPG

It’s easy to miss some of these critters, unless you know what you are looking for.  And when you are in a jeep driving on dirt paths and grassy areas, it’s really easy to miss many animals.  Which is why it was so great to have a guide who could point out animals that we would have easily missed because we don’t know what to look for.

Take the image above. Image driving around, with all the bumps in the group.  I’m willing to bet you, like me, would have missed the deer behind the tree.

However, once we knew what we were looking for, and the driver took us around to get a better view, we were rewarded kindly.

Simply beautiful!

Okapuka ranch is beautiful for more than just the animals that reside there.

It’s the land too!

We kept going on our journey through Okapuka ranch.

We came across a tortoise on the side of the road.  The driver spotted him and decided to get out for a closer look.

He was a beauty.  And once he figured out we were no threat to him, he came out of his shell a bit.

Can I just say – wow.  They were awe-inspiring.

DSCN2260.JPG

to see them in person is just incredible.  Especially in their own habitat.  And doing what they normally do.

The giraffes were fun to watch.  And apparently, they enjoyed watching us too.

As we continued through Okapuka ranch and our meeting of Warthogs and Springboks, we eventually started to see some other animals.  Like this one.

I believe that God, church, and theology are approachable, enjoyable, and relevant for everyone. I write about this a lot because people need to hear it. So many people feel lost, hopeless, alone, and are searching for identity and meaning. I'm an ELCA Pastor (Lutheran) who has a background in politics, business, and the non-profit worlds. I take churchy theological ideas and words and communicate them in everyday language that people can understand, in ways that relate, and show that God, church, and theology matter a great deal. Oh, and it doesn't have to be boring either - mostly because it's the best news ever!
