Iceland, prison, Reykjavik, society

As you might of picked up by now, things are a bit different in Iceland.

This is true of their prisons too.  Here is the prison in Reykjavik.

Iceland_466

It has room for 12 prisoners.  That’s right 12.  Let that sink in for a minute.

On the back side of the prison wall is a bar, where the prisoners can hear all the laughing and jovial activities going on inside.  The point being that the prisoners could be out enjoying themselves if they weren’t inside the prison.  Iceland takes a different look at prison – seeing it as an opportunity to reform a prisoner so they can be a productive member of society again.

This stems from the larger view of society.  There is a different culture.  There’s a different way of thinking about people.  There’s a different view about trust between people and institutions.  Then again, when you have less than half a million people in the entire country, maybe you can see things differently.

Iceland, Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík, Reykjavik, school

Right near the pond sits the oldest high school in Reykjavik – Menntaskólinn í Reykjavík.

Iceland_462

Here’s I’m offering a different view of the building, because, well, I thought it was a neat angle.

This is a really old school – dating back to 1056.  You know what was going on at that time?  In 1054, the Orthodox churches split off from Rome.  That’s how far back we are talking.

Maybe that’s another reason for the alternative view of the building.  It’s seen a great deal of change and history over time.  Yet it continues to stand.

bridge, city, Iceland, pond, Reykjavik

In the middle of Reykjavik there is a pond.  On one side is the city hall and on the other is more of the city.

Iceland_459

Actually, City Hall sits in the pond.  It’s a pretty neat building.  The outside has neat architectural design, even with the gray slab look.  The inside is pretty cool too.

The bridge is a nice feature.  When you are on it, it offers some nice views of the city in all directions.

And some great cityscape too..

Icelandic homes are unique.

Iceland_444

Maybe it’s the siding.

Iceland_445

Or maybe the colors.

Iceland_446

Or maybe it’s the styles and architecture.

Iceland_447

Regardless of what it is, it’s what makes Reykjavik unique.

Here’s another unique thing – the oldest home in Reykjavik.

Iceland_441

It fits right in with it’s neighbors doesn’t it?

Well, that’s what I’m calling it anyway.  It’s the square that is dedicated to the founder of Reykjavik, Ingólfur Arnarson.  He was a viking who saw the smokey bay and named it after that steam.

Today you can still see the steam coming up from the ground.

Iceland_439

It’s a nice open square.  And there’s a pole dedicated to the founder.

Iceland_440

Don’t ask me to translate, I don’t know Icelandic.  But regardless, it look pretty cool.

Cathedral, Iceland, Reykjavik

Being out in the water around Reykjavik allowed us to see a view of the city that is far different from other views.

Iceland_387

You discover that the city is actually quite short – in terms of tall buildings.

Iceland_389

The tallest building in the city is the Cathedral.  It sticks out rather distinctly, doesn’t it?

harbor, Iceland, puffins, Reykjavik

Our guide took us out into the water around Reykjavik to an island that is settled with puffins.

Iceland_383

It was so fun to watch these birds.  They must get so many visitors because they looked at us like they were saying “what are you looking at?”

Iceland_384

I just couldn’t get enough of the puffins.

harbor, HARPA, Iceland, Reykjavik

Reykjavik is a beautiful city.  There are some great sites to see.  Like HARPA – the concert hall and conference center.

Iceland_365

When it first went up, everyone here hated it.  They thought it was ugly.  Now, people like it and appreciate it as a landmark.

Reykjavik has a beautiful skyline too.  We enjoyed it as we made our way out to see the puffins.

I believe that God, church, and theology are approachable, enjoyable, and relevant for everyone. I write about this a lot because people need to hear it. So many people feel lost, hopeless, alone, and are searching for identity and meaning. I'm an ELCA Pastor (Lutheran) who has a background in politics, business, and the non-profit worlds. I take churchy theological ideas and words and communicate them in everyday language that people can understand, in ways that relate, and show that God, church, and theology matter a great deal. Oh, and it doesn't have to be boring either - mostly because it's the best news ever!
