Spring cleaning

cleaning, Spring

The other day I did a little spring cleaning for my blog.  I looked at the blogs I follow.  I had 98 blogs on that list.  I started looking at when those blogs last posted to their site.  I unfollowed several blogs that didn’t even exist any more.  Then I had the difficult decision of determining which blogs to unfollow based on the last time they posted anything.  I decided that any blog that hasn’t posted in seven months or more is probably done – and so I was done with it too.  I found one blog that I was following that hasn’t posted since 2014.  When it was all said and done, I now have a list of 66 blogs.

So why do I tell you all of this – cleaning up is important.  Emptying out is important.  Going through the stuff you collect and getting rid of things is good.  This is true for physical things that we have as well as for the intangibles too.

When is the last time you went through your closet and got rid of stuff?  I’m willing to bet that you would be able to get rid of 25% of the things in your closet if you looked.

When is the last time you went through your ideas and beliefs about various things in life.  Are you still holding onto that old belief about God as some old white guy with a long beard sitting on a chair in the clouds just waiting to smite you.  It might be time to replace that belief if something that actually works and is closer to the truth.

Or maybe it’s time to get rid of some beliefs about money.  Or work.  Or relationships. Or success.  Or failure.  Or something about yourself.  So many options.

Clear out some of those things in your life that you just don’t need anymore.  You’ll be relieved.

A Beautiful Spring Day

Image On days like today, isn’t everything just water under the bridge?  It was just so perfect today, that there was nothing that could spoil the day.  And so when I got up, I went on a bike ride.  A nice long 14 mile bike ride on my favorite trail.

Then it was time for soccer for one of our children.

After that, we had time and went to a state park to enjoy nature.  I couldn’t ask for a better day.  It’s amazing what, or rather who, you can find when you stop to look.

And some wonders never cease to amaze, like this tree.  I’m left wondering what its story is.  How did grow like this?

ImageAll in all, a perfect beautiful spring day.  It just doesn’t get better than this.

I believe that God, church, and theology are approachable, enjoyable, and relevant for everyone. I write about this a lot because people need to hear it. So many people feel lost, hopeless, alone, and are searching for identity and meaning. I'm an ELCA Pastor (Lutheran) who has a background in politics, business, and the non-profit worlds. I take churchy theological ideas and words and communicate them in everyday language that people can understand, in ways that relate, and show that God, church, and theology matter a great deal. Oh, and it doesn't have to be boring either - mostly because it's the best news ever!
