Letchworth State Park, new york, table

There’s a great deal of terminology concerning tables.  We can table something meaning, we put it off, or kill it.  We can talk about “what’s on the table?” as in what are we going to deal with next?

When you travel though, especially to a state park, this should be the only table you think about:

Then again, when you are Letchworth State Park, you could consider a few things on the table, like this:

Or better still:

Lesson for church: Pay attention to what’s on the agenda!  Stop talking about which brand of pencil the church is going to buy and start talking about the mission of the church – the only thing that really matters.

Moving Day, Part 2

So yesterday was our big moving day.  It was a long day, but we got it all done.  We are very grateful for that.  It’s amazing how much stuff a person and a family collects over the years.  It’s a good thing that we are not pack rats.  I think the only thing I really collect are books, and I surprised myself in that I got rid of five boxes of books before we started the move.  I still have a ton of books, but when we get back, I can go through them again and get rid of more.

So today was moving day, part 2. We took two van loads of our stuff to Pappy’s house for safekeeping. Actually some of it will be going out for sale in an effort to get rid of more stuff.

One positive of moving is that it forces you to think about all the stuff you have – do you have to take the effort to box it up, find a home for it, and move it, or would you rather get rid of the item.  It’s not a bad thing.  It doesn’t always take moving for me to sort through my stuff like this.  I’ve done it with clothing before.  A couple of years ago, I had determined to get rid of 25% of my clothing.  It wasn’t as difficult as I thought.  And the result was less stuff.

We still have more stuff to move out of the house, but it’s certainly closer to done than before.  In fact, we only have four chairs left in the house – four folding chairs that go with our “dining room table” – a folding table.  If you want to sit, you either sit on the folding chairs or on the floor.

I believe that God, church, and theology are approachable, enjoyable, and relevant for everyone. I write about this a lot because people need to hear it. So many people feel lost, hopeless, alone, and are searching for identity and meaning. I'm an ELCA Pastor (Lutheran) who has a background in politics, business, and the non-profit worlds. I take churchy theological ideas and words and communicate them in everyday language that people can understand, in ways that relate, and show that God, church, and theology matter a great deal. Oh, and it doesn't have to be boring either - mostly because it's the best news ever!
