Cathedral of Learning, change, Church, culture, institution, Pittsburgh, view

After the Welsh room, we headed up to the 36th floor of the Cathedral of Learning.  From there, we had the opportunity to get some incredible views of the Pittsburgh area, which we took advantage of.

Considering I have a pretty severe fear of heights, I even amazed myself with being the one taking the pictures.  Maybe I was fine because the windows were not that big and I didn’t feel like I was going to be sucked out to my death.

Regardless, I was thrilled to be able to enjoy the view.  Small steps my friends, small steps.

Lesson for church: Small steps. We can’t expect huge changes in the church. Change is not the norm in church. It’s an institution and institutions don’t change on their own or willingly.  The church has a culture and cultures don’t like to change either.  There has to be a good reason to change – you can’t just change for change’s sake.  There’s no purpose to that.  But we can and should change in order to better carry out the mission of God.  Any step in that direction is a step forward.

Did I mention that Pittsburgh is a city of beautiful views?

There’s inclines, hills, city, woods, railroads, boats, and rivers.  A great combination.

1000 Steps, Pennsylvania, politics, view

When you reach the top of 1000 steps, you are rewarded with some amazing views.

Here’s the thing about views from high above.  They give you something unique – perspective.  You can see far out.  You can see many things and how they come together.

If only our politics worked this way.

Arnarholl, hill, Iceland, Reykjavik, view

From up atop Arnarholl, you get some amazing views of part of Reykjavik.

You can see HARPA

Iceland_470.JPG

That’s great and all, but I love looking out over the other places – the places that contain everyday life, like this:

Iceland_471.JPG

It’s the harbor.  Life continues to roll on as it has every day for centuries.  The technology might change, but life keeps going on.

Iceland is a place like no other.

The landscape is just something you aren’t going to see anywhere else.

It’s spacious.

It goes on for miles.

And all you see is more land.  That’s all.

Overlooks are neat.  They have the potential to provide some truly awesome views of cities and other landscapes.

Kohtu Viewplatform, Tallinn, EstoniaAnd of course, the view changes with each season.

We got to see a beautiful view of Tallinn in winter when we were there at the end of December.  The snow on the rooftops creates a unique view.  It also brings out different views that we don’t normally see.

Kohtu Viewplatform, Tallinn, EstoniaThe view platform gives visitors such a unique way of seeing the city – seeing things from above.

Kohtu Viewplatform, Tallinn, EstoniaAnd the benefit of this is that it feels safe enough to be up that high for those of us who have a fear of heights (like I do).  I felt lucky to be able to see so much from this height.

Estonia, park, Schnelli Park, Tallinn, view

After we enjoyed Pilsticker tower and courtyard, we took a look out over Schnelli Park.

There are actually steps that one can take to get down to the park.

Overlooking Schnelli Park, Tallinn, EstoniaWe weren’t too keen on walking down on snow covered steps, so we just enjoyed the view from up top.

Overlooking Schnelli Park, Tallinn, Estonia From the courtyard, you can really see a great view of the park and this part of the city.  And the snow certainly makes the view even better.

Overlooking Schnelli Park, Tallinn, EstoniaYou can almost picture children playing and couples sitting on blankets in the park when it is warmer can’t you?

Overlooking Schnelli Park, Tallinn, EstoniaFor us, we were just happy to be there and enjoy the view for a few minutes.

I believe that God, church, and theology are approachable, enjoyable, and relevant for everyone. I write about this a lot because people need to hear it. So many people feel lost, hopeless, alone, and are searching for identity and meaning. I'm an ELCA Pastor (Lutheran) who has a background in politics, business, and the non-profit worlds. I take churchy theological ideas and words and communicate them in everyday language that people can understand, in ways that relate, and show that God, church, and theology matter a great deal. Oh, and it doesn't have to be boring either - mostly because it's the best news ever!
