Iceland has some unique things, as I’ve mentioned in the past.  Today I want to focus on one in particular. This:

Iceland_468.JPG

It’s a “monument” in the ground in a park, dedicated to the memory of a a huge volcanic eruption.

That’s not something that you see just anywhere.  Of course, Iceland is a volcanic island, so it would make sense that you’d see such a monument here.  Still, pretty neat.

We took a few more minutes to enjoy some of the beauty of creation.

Iceland_349

There is nothing quite like looking out across the land and seeing nothing but nature.

It’s one of the few times in my life where I have felt total peace.  There’s no bickering and fighting over land or resources, fighting over who’s right and who’s wrong.  There’s no worrying about who’s in charge and how they are using power and who’s getting screwed.  There’s no made up human problems at all.  It’s just nature, with it’s own set of issues – working them out in it’s own way, or vast lengths of time.

In the Volcano

Iceland, volcano

We made our way down into the volcano.  And then we looked back up to where we were.

Iceland_333

It’s actually quick a steep drop from the top of the crest to the middle of the volcano.

But the boys loves it there too.  What’s not to love, more rocks to play with and throw.

After hanging out in the crater, it was time to climb back up to the crest of the volcano, so we could have more amazing views of the surrounding area.

Iceland, volcano

We made it to the top of the volcano.  And this was what we saw.

Iceland_327

It’s looking down in.  But it also gives a view of the landscape around.  For many, many kilometers (Sorry American friends, when in Europe, you measure like Europeans).

The view from the top is simply amazing.

Our next stop, going down in the volcano.  The boys were excited to go in an explore.  So many rocks to play with.

Iceland, volcano, wildflowers

We continued our journey to the top of the volcano.  We were almost there.  It was getting steeper now – more effort was needed to keep climbing.

Iceland_322

Even there though, there was beauty all around us.  Our guide would stop along the way and show us wildflowers and other beauties of nature.  Things that grow in places you would never dream of.  Yet they defy the odds and thrive.

One last effort and we would be there.  One last climb up the side of the volcano and we would be rewarded with beautiful sights.

Wall of solid lava

Iceland, lava, volcano, wall

We were walking through the path of where the lava flowed from the volcano.  Our guide told us that the lava was like water – it takes the path of least resistance and flows downhill.

Iceland_301

As it flows, it moves very fast and hits up against things and as lava separates from the flow, it hardens as it begins to cool.  That hardening leaves a wall in the valley.  The wall was easily 60-100 feet tall.  And the best part is that the wall is rounded, curving in on itself, not straight up and down.  Very cool.

Iceland_302

We had the opportunity to look as some of the hardened lava pieces and examine them.

And we learned about the different colors in the lava rocks as well.

I believe that God, church, and theology are approachable, enjoyable, and relevant for everyone. I write about this a lot because people need to hear it. So many people feel lost, hopeless, alone, and are searching for identity and meaning. I'm an ELCA Pastor (Lutheran) who has a background in politics, business, and the non-profit worlds. I take churchy theological ideas and words and communicate them in everyday language that people can understand, in ways that relate, and show that God, church, and theology matter a great deal. Oh, and it doesn't have to be boring either - mostly because it's the best news ever!
