Bible, James, Word

James 1:22 states:

But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves.

I’m keeping it short today.  No need for a lengthy post here.

How are doing in relation to James 1:22?  Are you a doer of the word, or merely a hearer only?

According to James if you are only a hearer, then you are deceiving yourself.

Time to get honest.

Quote about Scripture

I read the following quote about Scripture recently:

“Maturing as hearers of Word means approaching Scripture not as a magical answer book but as the church’s primary witness to the sovereign, holy love of God supremely reveal in Jesus Christ”  (pg. 241, Faith Seeking Understanding, Migliore).

I think this is a great quote.  It’s how I try to approach Scripture.  The Bible doesn’t have all the answers.  It was never written to have all the answers.  Many times it raises more questions that provides answers.  And that’s ok.  We’re talking about God here.  God doesn’t have insecurity issues – God can handle questions.

A professor of mine was once asked if he took the Bible literally.  He responded “No, but I try to take it seriously.”  Good insight.

I believe that God, church, and theology are approachable, enjoyable, and relevant for everyone. I write about this a lot because people need to hear it. So many people feel lost, hopeless, alone, and are searching for identity and meaning. I'm an ELCA Pastor (Lutheran) who has a background in politics, business, and the non-profit worlds. I take churchy theological ideas and words and communicate them in everyday language that people can understand, in ways that relate, and show that God, church, and theology matter a great deal. Oh, and it doesn't have to be boring either - mostly because it's the best news ever!
